Payson Arizona is a friendly
community of about 15,000, with roots extending back to the ranching and
mining days of the 1800's. It was rumored to have some of the best bootleg
liquor in Arizona in the early 1900's. Zane Grey brought fame to the area
through his novels such as "Under the Tonto Rim" and television helped show the
beauty of the area, especially in "Grizzly Adams". MGM's lion was
rescued by local cowboys when a plane crashed in the 1940's in the Hell's Gate
area not far from the present Tonto Apache Reservation.
Payson is a blend of Old West
flavor, alpine forests, and modern amenities. Four seasons of mild weather
provide a wealth of outdoor activities with lots of hiking and cycling trails,
horseback riding, golf and miniature golf, batting cages, fishing and lakes. The
community offers a range of activities and entertainment from antique stores and
art galleries to museums and movies, and many excellent restaurants.
